Tim Richards in London has recommended a slightly obscure Nippo-slasher that I feel I must share with the world:
May I heartily recommend the 1977 Japanese horror film House or Hausu, directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi. A girl gets eaten by a piano and a man is turned into a pile of bananas for no obvious reason. I can't really get across the mood of the film. Just imagine something completely garish, bright and colourful with incredibly sentimental music except that everything is really gory and doesn't make any sense. Or watch the trailer:
