Outnumbered by a trio! A call for help from the wild frontier of jazz

Yesterday the Myra Melford trio were playing at Fasching.

Duncan had told me about the gig but warned me that it might be a bit too "out there" for my taste. As he knows, my musical taste is so omnivorous that it would make a goat look like a picky eater. But clearly Myra is ready to go places where only the bravest, hardcore jazz-daddios are bold enough to follow her. Usually these places are full of lots of atonal honking, keyboards being manhandled and long, sub-sonic bass solos.

So I decided to give it a miss.

Anyway, at 19.00 I received a text message, a call for reinforcements from the untamed frontiers of jazz.Duncan and Tim were the only people in the building and were about to be outnumbered by Myra and her trio.

I could point out that Mr Cooper does have something of a track record as regards taking me to sparsely attended events. Worst of them all was a fringe play on Södermalm: Tingel Tangle? Hokey Cokey? Tinky Winky? Honky Donky?

For the first half there were as many people in the audience as on stage. After the break, everyone else left, leaving Duncan and myself alone. Excruciating!

So did I grab my Gitanes and beret and head off to untrod wastes of improvised cacophony? Did I hell!

The Antique Road Show (Antikrundan)was on telly which is one of the family's favourite shows.Kai loves it because of the fascinating ancient objects. I love it, because by the end of it he is always fast asleep and slumbers on all night.

Jazz on daddios!

  1. Did anyone tell you that you are a talented writer? These small sketches are often real gems, and I'd say that a year down the line you should be able to compile the best ones, polish it into a coherent whole and pitch it as a kitchen sink novel for the 21st centuiry to a UK publisher under the title "I'm an Englishman in Kärrtorp".

  2. Agree entirely: John has a wonderful light touch. (Do I get a complimentary copy of your first novel for that bit of blurb?)
