Tiny peckers

Kai, his pal Konrad and I were walking home through the forest after the end of term celebrations on Wednesday when our attention was grabbed by a hole in a tree from which came an almighty row. On closer examination, we discovered it was a bird's nest and the baby birds inside were screaming for lunch.

An intelligent guess tells me that they were woodpecker chicks. The more knowlegeable twitchers among you will doubtless be mines of useful information on Nordic 'peckers.I apologise for my ignorance.

Everything is so green here right now. Summer arrives at a hurtling pace in Stockholm and the birds and the bees get to work with a vengeance. One week everything is deep in snow, the next it's spring (which seems to only last seven days)and then the week after that summer is in full swing.

I think it's indicative of how Swedified I've become that I get so excited about this sort of thing. These days I really need to live near a forest so that, if need be, I can go out and hug a few trees or roll around in a heap of dead leaves.
